Quality and equality of education

Today, more than ever, it is essential to improve the quality and equality of education systems worldwide. Automation increases the demand for highly skilled workers, creating a greater need for technological, social, and cognitive skills. The development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is accelerating these labor market transitions. Education systems should not only focus on preparing for the labor market. Still, they should also increasingly be involved in solving social problems, such as the deterioration of young people’s mental health, political polarisation, or the fight against climate change.

In many countries of the world, student performance stagnates or decreases. The World Bank estimates that seventy percent of students in middle-income and low-income countries live in “learning poverty,” meaning they cannot read plain text by the end of primary school. This figure in sub-Saharan Africa is almost ninety percent. Furthermore, over the past decade, most education systems have not made significant improvements, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the problems as the loss of learning time has widened inequalities.

If historical trends continue, more than 700 million children will remain in learning poverty by 2050. This could have serious economic and political consequences worldwide. However, according to the McKinsey report, if all education systems increased learning outcomes at their best rates, an additional 350 million students could be lifted out of learning poverty over the next 30 years.

Examples from all over the World

However, some countries’ education systems are able to overcome challenges and continuously improve students’ learning outcomes. These systems can be found on all continents and at all levels of development. Common features of successful systems include the use of evidence-based strategies, strong leadership, data-driven interventions, and tailoring reforms to specific challenges.

Singapore: Large investment in educational foundations, selection of teachers from among the best students and provision of continuous professional development.

Poland: Redesign the curriculum to focus on critical thinking and reasoning and involve teachers in the design and implementation of reforms.

Brazil: Achieve significant improvements through strengthening basic reading and maths skills and regular professional development of teachers.

Stratiges to start with

Successful education systems use several strengthening strategies that are equally important for long-term development:

  1. Evidence-based foundations: The changes focus on classroom instruction, especially improving the quality of teachers and the content they deliver.
  2. Lasting collaborations: Focus on a few priorities supported by all stakeholders in the system.
  3. Create capacity to scale: Quickly switch from strategy to implementation create dedicated teams to execute the plan.
  4. Data-driven Development and Adaptation: Rigorously measure learning outcomes and use transparent data to improve interventions.
  5. Create an Innovation Space: Making room for innovation and measuring its impact to increase the effectiveness of existing interventions.

Improving global education systems is not an easy task, but examples of successful systems show that it is possible to achieve significant and lasting improvements. Education leaders need to learn from these systems and apply best practices in their own environments to provide better learning opportunities for all students.

The Tiobe index ranks programming languages by popularity every month. Let’s see which is currently the most popular programming language!

The index is compiled by Tiobe Software and is based on data from various sources, such as search results, educational courses, developer community activity, and other online sources. The Tiobe index does not necessarily reflect the actual use of a language. Still, it does indicate which languages are at the forefront of developers and industry. The index is often used to analyze language trends and demand for programming skills.

Well, on this index, the Python programming language reached its highest-ever rating of 18.04% in August 2024.

This is the first time since Java’s 18% rating in 2016 that a language has scored this high. Python has been leading the index since October 2021, mainly because it is easy to learn and in high demand for software engineers. Python is currently eight percentage points ahead of second-placed C++.

Developers aren’t afraid of AI, they’re giving it a run for its money

GitHub’s 2024 survey explored the rise in popularity of AI in software development, surveying 2,000 developers from the US, Brazil, India, and Germany.

97% of respondents have used some form of AI-enabled coding tools, but the level of support varies from company to company: 88% of companies in the US support the use of artificial intelligence, compared to 59% in Germany. It’s tools help productivity, improve code quality, and help new programming languages to be learned faster.

According to respondents, the main benefits of AI include

  • Improved code quality,
  • more accessible learning of new programming languages,
  • and speeding up the generation of test cases.

Artificial intelligence tools have proved particularly useful in the US and India, where a large majority of respondents have seen significant improvements in code quality. The survey results suggest that tools are playing an increasing role in software development and are helping to improve developer efficiency.

In addition, the survey highlights that using AI tools can help developers focus on higher-level tasks such as system design and teamwork.

Many respondents are optimistic about the future impact of these tools, particularly in improving code security and increasing development efficiency. According to respondents, AI-generated tests are faster to complete, and better cover different aspects of code, but human verification is still needed to avoid errors.

The survey also highlights that knowledge of AI tools is an increasing advantage for job seekers, as developers believe that AI-related skills will increase their chances of employment. The survey results indicate that using AI tools could soon become a standard requirement in software development roles.

Overall, GitHub’s survey shows that AI technology has a growing impact on software development and has significant potential to increase the efficiency and security of development processes and make developers’ jobs easier. The wider adoption and integration of AI tools could be critical for companies to take advantage of AI and gain a competitive advantage.

The latest statistics on employment in the European Union in 2023 are out. The IT sector offers great opportunities for career changers.

The Hungarian data is slightly lower than the EU average, but the share of people working in the IT sector in Hungary is still above 4%. Sweden had the highest share of ICT professionals (8.7%), while Greece had the lowest (2.4%). The share of female ICT professionals has also increased, with almost one in five ICT professionals in 2023 being women. Interestingly, Bulgaria had the highest proportion of women (29.1%) and the Czech Republic the lowest (12.4%), which is difficult to explain, as the Czech Republic is thought to be a more developed, westernized society. The figure for Hungarians is around 15%, a hair’s breadth below the Italian figure, for example.

The big question of our time is: will robots take our jobs? So much so that the tabloids are talking about it. A tangible, accessible expression of the fears of modern man. Yet the fear of the new, of change, of progress, is a fear that is as old as humanity itself. Reducing risks and prioritizing safety have been the motivations that have ensured man’s long-term survival, from the idea of ‘storing wood and grain for winter’ to the mission ‘we should have a vaccine against epidemics’.

Although the analysis is based on robotization and digitalization developments between 2010 and 2018, its labor market conclusions may be valid for the 1920s.

They found that women close to retirement are most at risk of having their jobs taken over by robots and, crucially, have little chance of finding a new occupation or position.

At the same time, young, low-skilled, male manual workers performing routine operations are not safe either.

However, an exciting study finding is that the employment rate for women aged 20 to 48 in knowledge-based, thinking occupations has increased!

Another important detail is that while robotization itself does impact employment rates, digitalization—i.e., IT tools and software that help people do their jobs—improves rather than reduces employment rates.

Layoffs in the IT sector – What’s the reality?

In the first half of the year, we have been hearing and reading that there are considerable redundancies in the IT sector, that everyone is downsizing, and that there may not be a need for IT workers in the future. The articles even cited one or two large employers as examples of thousands of redundancies. At some companies, there were even forced retirements.

At Codecool, we see the market differently. The term “forced retirement” surprises us, as it is not common for programmers to “age out” prematurely in the IT sector. However, before we formulate a firm opinion, we would like to examine the facts and figures on the market more closely.

In the first five months of 2024, 110 companies announced redundancies (immediate or due during 2024), totaling 71,000 employees, according to official data. This is worth comparing with the 191 thousand redundancies in 2023 for the whole year. Thus, the pace of redundancies has already slowed down at the beginning of 2024, and we can return to the trend of 2022 (93 thousand redundancies over the whole year)

Looking at the first five months of 2024, we see that the top 19 of the 110 companies account for the vast majority of all layoffs: 61,000 workers were accounted for by announcements from companies such as Dell, IBM, Tesla, Paypal, etc. If we look at the reasons given by the 110 companies for the layoffs, the top three reasons are as follows:

The IT sector is being transformed

The situation of the information technology sector in recent years has been something like a rollercoaster. At the time of the pandemic, with the global shift to the online space, it was still on a steep upward curve and the demand for IT professionals was skyrocketing. Then in 2023, during the post-pandemic recovery period, nearly 191,000 IT professionals were laid off worldwide.

This may seem drastic, but 26% of this crowd was made redundant by the big five tech giants – Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Apple – who already had massive headcounts.

While there’s an overflow of IT professionals in some areas, there is a huge demand for talent in other regions working with newer technologies. For example, there is still a need for full-stack developers, DevOps engineers, and Salesforce specialists in the country. It’s a wrap! Here are our highlights from 2022

Before we say goodbye to 2022, here’s a roundup of what we’ve done and a glance into our future plans.

2022: A game-changer for us

This was a tremendous year for us: we’ve started a new chapter with Software Development Academy  (SDA) and thus created the most extensive digital skilling center in Central Europe. 

We’re also glad for the new partnerships, the variety of corporate IT training our partners entrusted us with, and for launching even more digital careers. We took an active role in closing the digital skills gap and explored further solutions this year.

A new chapter together with SDA

The main event of the year was joining forces with SDA and creating Central Europe’s biggest digital skilling and sourcing powerhouse. This means we’re now able to deliver a far higher number of quality candidates to our corporate partners. In the next year, we aim to train 15.000-20.000 individuals.

We also expanded our geographical coverage. We’re now present in 8 countries: Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Romania, and Albania. Our mentor pool has also increased to a whopping 1600 mentors, while the number of digital reskilling paths has jumped to 17.

But this was just the beginning. As the Central European region has the biggest digital talent pool on the continent, and there’s an unprecedented need for digitally skilled people in the next decade, our plan is to expand our geographical footprint and product offering further.

Large-scale digital skills training projects

We’re proud that we had a variety of corporate IT training and governmental projects this year, with clients including T-Systems and Generali.

We completed three rounds of Motorola Solutions Academy in Poland. For this comprehensive sourcing and training program, we’ve recruited and selected the participants, delivered their seven-month training, and supported their onboarding process as well. 

Another project that we’re proud of is our collaboration with MindTree. We helped them recruit tech talent to provide technical support for Microsoft products in their newly opened office in Poland. 

Within the framework of a program launched by the Hungarian Ministry of Innovation and Technology, we trained 400 unemployed people in 17 weeks. We helped the selected participants gain marketable skills and a state-recognized certificate as a front-end or back-end developer, software tester, or system administrator. 

Thanks to the program, participants got a new chance at employment and started new future-proof tech careers.

Software Skills Strategy for Europe

As a member of the European Software Skills Alliance (ESSA), we’re developing and implementing a Software Skills Strategy, and Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs for Europe. We’re doing this together with 25 industry and education stakeholders, such as Adecco and Amazon Web Services.

This four-year transnational project aims to ensure that the skills needs of the rapidly evolving software sector can be met.

Increased talent base

We’re proud that in 2022 we had close to 70% more students than last year: this means more than 1200 tech talent started their Codecool journey this year. It also means that an increased number of junior programmers can land open roles at our partners. 

We also launched new course formats for our flagship Full-Stack Development course, as well as several shorter courses, such as the Software Tester course in Romania and the Agile course in Poland.

After opening our campus in Austria last year, we already placed the first students at SSI Schäfer and SMATRICS this year.

We’re glad that thanks to our partners, we also managed to extend our job guarantee to other cities. Thus, companies can now hire our graduates in several major cities across the countries where we’re present.

Looking ahead

Overall, 2022 has been a year of expansion, growth, and dedication for us at Codecool.

In 2023, we aim to continue our work of offering the best IT talent and supporting candidates to become job-ready digital professionals in less than a year. We’re also looking forward to new partnerships with companies and governments to help close the tech skills gap.

Digital professionals – who they are, and why they’re important

In the modern labor market, it’s getting harder to define who a digital professional is. Why?

Because the boundaries between those who use digital tools and those who do digital work are blurred. However, this must be clarified to tailor appropriate supply strategies to labor market needs.

We talked about the topic with the leaders of Europe’s two leading programming schools, Codecool and SDA, who recently announced their companies’ merger: Michał Mysiak, CEO, and József Boda, Vice President. We asked them about the demand for digital professionals, and how their newly merged company can help to supply these.

Who is really missing from the labor market? Are companies looking for software developers or people who can work well with a computer?

Boda József: There is a massive labor shortage in the market. At one end of the digital skills spectrum, you’ll find basic computer skills, and at the other, NASA programmers. Neither end is our area of expertise. But in between, there is a vast spectrum with countless ramifications and specialization directions. We could categorize them, but any classification can become invalid in months in this dynamically changing industry. What is certain is that the entry threshold is constantly creeping upward in most professions. In this way, the concept of “professional” is becoming more and more conditional and demanding. This is in the form of demand for new workers and, in many industries, the need to retrain and upskill existing workers.

Michał Mysiak: The cooperation between Codecool and SDA aims to serve this broad spectrum with as much coverage as possible. Not only in a geographical sense but also in terms of the needs of the employer side. We have relationships with more than 400 companies, from global brands to local businesses. We have the expertise and experience to train the workforce to meet specific, bespoke orders and foreseeable employer needs.

What ensures that Codecool and SDA are not only training workers according to their existing partners’ needs and preferences but also serving potential new entrants?

Boda József: Of course, our approach is much more far-reaching. We tailor our strategy to regional and continental trends. One of the key objectives of the European Commission’s Digital Decade program is to employ 20 million professionals in digital industries by 2030 while also taking care of gender balance. This European ambition can only be achieved through comprehensive sectoral retraining programs.

Michał Mysiak: We play a significant role in achieving this vision by bringing our companies together. The EU countries we cover have the highest public interest in future-proof and well-paid digital careers. Investors will come to our region if they can be confident that they can find the right skilled workforce, now and in the future. It’s essential to stress that everyone is generally moving up that particular ladder, so we also need to ensure that we can provide an open and evolving workforce to meet future needs. It is not enough to think of career changers of workers newly oriented toward infotech; in-house training and retraining programs are just as important.

In previous years, the training of programmers was usually linked to a career change. Does this mean that the new trend is for everyone to go digital within their profession?

Boda József:

Indeed, in recent years, musicians, drivers, tour guides, and countless other professionals have turned to programming and entered this career. But digitalization has become part of everyday life in most traditional industries. In logistics, commerce, manufacturing, and even personal services such as beauty care or legal advice, we are seeing digital solutions implemented all the time. Using, developing, analyzing, and visualizing the data that moves within them requires digital skills.

We have reached a stage of digital transformation where companies can go digital by quickly and efficiently upskilling their existing, loyal, skilled workforce without necessarily having to think about new people or outsourcing. The most significant growth – and the EU strategies mentioned earlier – is predicted to come from training within the sector.
